The Social Security Fairness Act increases benefits for workers who didn’t pay Social Security taxes. This act ends the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset, which were in place to reduce the benefits for workers that Social Security didn’t cover.
The act will increase the social security benefits for:
- Teachers
- Firefighters
- Police officers
- Federal employees covered by the Civil Service Retirement System
- Workers who had been covered by a foreign social security system
The act was signed into law on January 5, 2025, but the benefits increase for these groups of people didn’t happen until February 25, 2025. Beneficiaries due for retroactive benefits were given a one-time payment for those previous benefits.
The amount of the increase varies depending on the person’s situation. The Social Security Fairness Act has increased the benefits of millions of Americans.
